1. Provide an example of when you had to think quickly on your feet to help a patient.

Since cardiac nurses deal with patients that can have life-threatening conditions, the interviewer needs to know that you can react to an emergency appropriately to save a patient’s life.

If you don’t have an applicable life-saving experience, choose something close to it or describe what you would do in that kind of situation.

When I worked with diabetic patients, there were several times that I became aware of mood changes.

I quickly tested my patient’s blood sugar to determine the problem and was able to stabilize him before he was in danger.

2. Have you ever had a patient that was not satisfied with the level of care you provided?

How you answer this question will show the interviewer:

how well you treat your patients,
how you solve problems,

and how you learn from difficult situations.

They are aware that a patient’s dissatisfaction may not mean your level of care was poor, but how you react to the situation speaks volumes to the type of nurse you are.

Sample answer:

I did have a patient who was not pleased with the level of care they were receiving so I inquired how what I could do to correct it.

They wanted to be better informed of their condition more clearly.

So I resolved to explain things in simpler terms and am more aware of my transparency and vocabulary when communicating with patients now.

3. Why did you choose to become a cardiac nurse?

The interviewer is looking for passion here.

They want to know why you chose this specialty over all the others.

Demonstrate to them your capabilities and your inspiration for being a cardiac nurse.

They will want to hire someone who loves what they do.

Sample answer:

I wanted to be a nurse ever since I was little but decided to specialize in cardiology after my grandfather developed heart disease and I witnessed how involved his nurses were with his care.

I was inspired by their ability to be compassionate and professional in their patients’ treatments.

4. How would you deal with a stubborn patient?

This is another question that is going to show if you have the patience and resolve to be a good cardiac nurse.

Interviewers want to see that you have a good bedside manner but can also hold your own against a stubborn patient to do what is best for their health and care.

Use examples of how you may have handled a stubborn patient in the past.

Sample answer:

At my previous nursing job, I had a patient who refused to take his prescribed medication when I gave it to him.

I calmly explained why it was important for him to take the medication and the consequences of his health if he didn’t.

I expressed that we didn’t want him to get sicker and he finally consented to take the medication.

5. How would you handle a conflict that arose between you and a coworker?

It is one thing to handle a stubborn or dissatisfied patient, but quite another to resolve an issue with a fellow nurse.

The interviewer needs to know that the candidate they hire is going to be a good team player.

Describe how you would resolve a conflict and use examples to help bolster your argument.

Sample answer:

If a coworker and I disagreed, I would ask them how I could change or act to help resolve the conflict.

I would express a willingness to work together to find common ground to achieve the goal of giving our patients the best possible care.

6. Why do you want to be a cardiac nurse at our hospital?

This is when it will show if you’ve done your homework or not.

Interviewers want to know that the person they hire is not only invested in their job but also invested in the healthcare facility.

They are looking for someone to add value to their medical team.

They want someone who wants to be at their facility and not just anywhere.

Sample answer:

I noticed that your healthcare facility was one of the top-rate cardiac care hospitals in the country working with cutting-edge research and technology.

It has always been my dream to work with such a fantastic cardiac facility.

7. If you discovered that you made a mistake, how would you go about fixing it?

How you answer this question will speak volumes about how responsible and honest you are.

Both are qualities that are extremely important for cardiac nurses.

If I discovered that I made a mistake, especially with a patient’s care, I would immediately correct it and notify the patient’s doctor.
